View Full Version : Post your Thrift Store/Value Village Finds!

Thrift shops can prove to be a goldmine for toy hauls of all shapes and sizes. I still regularly find 25 to 30 years old toys there all the time, from He-Man to Thunder Cats to Transformers to Star Wars and more..

Lets post up the finds here!:)

I've never found anything good at a thrift store.

I guess the question would be....Define good? Complete figures are very unlikely to be found, but older stuff even incomplete can still be a good catch.:)

The value village near me seems to have an inconsistent pricing strategy. Star wars figures, for example, can be 2.99 each, or 3 for 2.00, I think depending on who is doing the pricing out back. Some people think any star wars figure is a collector's item, and others see them as "another miscellaneous toy".

Also I've noticed the quality of value village's toy section varies widely from store to store. The one up here near York University has almost no action figures of any sort, where the one I go to in Hamilton has basically a whole isle dedication to "boys toys".

Robimus

Often I think it depends upon location. I've noticed that the VV's near the poorer neighborhoods in Winnipeg don't have as good a selection as the ones in the wealthier areas. Seems to make sense.

As to the pricing, it can be all over the map. Some VV employees seem to think they "know" what these items should and should not cost. (At times I've seen loose Star Wars figures going for $7.99. Of course they really don't sell at that price point.)

Often times I've also found that the newer toys get priced higher than the vintage stuff.

Basically I've got two favorite VV's in Winnipeg that I hit up on a regular basis. The other two I alomst never go to becuase the selection is never good.

I also go through dry spells where I'll go 3-6 times and find almost nothing. But its that one time that the mother load comes up that keeps me going back for more.:)

It's a little like gambling, only with little cost and a nice potetnial payoff.:p

True. I found a G1 Prime cab at Value Village once maybe 5-7 years ago, and a Seacon around the same time. Once Transformers became really popular I stopped trying as I couldn't find anything anymore so stopped looking. I saw various loose Star Wars and G.I. Joe figures there from time to time but they were mostly beat up.

I do go to more than one ;)

It seems like that if your willing to pop in their stores several times a week you will be rewarded. That said I drive past two VV's regularly so I'm not going out of my way.

I think if you check the Cybertron thread you'll find that more people than me have success with this.:)

Just want to share my joy with y'all...

Today at Value Village (Lawrence Avenue East & Golf Club, Scarborough, Toronto), I scored a carded, original Thundercats Laser Sabers Energy Pack (the black one) for a mere $2.99.

Almost as cool as that were the four random LJN WWF Thumbwrestlers it was bagged up with.

I guess you can't call something 'Mint-On-Card' when the item itself is mint but the card is battered to hell, but I'm still thrilled with it.

I can't make out the corporate logo on the price tag stuck to the card, but it seems the last asking price was $14.99... there is a little red dot affixed to that too, suggesting that the original retail price was even higher. I don't remember toys being that expensive in the 80s but this thing boasts on the card that it interacts with other 'Laser Sabers Energy Packs' and 'The Cat's Lair' - the feature seems to be some kind of light-based Captain Power type thing.

The only thing I remember about these the first time around is that they came in four colours... blue and orange for cats and black and red for mutants.

This is a little bittersweet because I sold my loose T-cats earlier in the year and I doubt that this will form the cornerstone of a new collection, i'll likely keep it for a while and shuffle it on, still a great find though.

I roll into that Value Village every month or so but I've never found anything carded or this vintage before.. just goes to show you never know.:)

Last night at a Good Will store in Scarborough I scored a naked He-Man date-stamped 1991 (but real), the blue, red, yellow and white power rangers (all lacking accessories) and last, but not least...

Lion-O!!! (red hair, no gear, paint at an 8/10).

Not a bad haul for $3 eh?

The interesting thing was that I had been there at noon earlier the same day and there was absolutely nothing in the vein of action figures.

This place isn't your typical Good Will store, they bill it as a 'Re-Use' centre and while they focus on hockey equipment, apparently all the unsold goods from their other stores in the area make their way back there and every half hour or so they roll out another bin of stuff... and the vultures descend en masse.

Got some cool figures from VV today $4 for the whole lot:

Sectaurs: General Spidrax
Sectaurs: Skulk
6" Batman Figure (anyone know what its from) there is no date stamp just TM & DC Comics (s03) China
A Power Ranger, foot seems to have been chewed partially lol
And another random spiderman figure for the junk bin.

Most excited about the Sectaurs, i completely forgot about these guys until just now, super awesome figures.

Also like that Batman, nice having a good looking 6" batman on my desk at work.

Rather strange as well.

Found 2 box sets of Japanese imports from bandai of figures from the anime cyborg 009. I'd never even heard of the show and had to google it when I got home.
Complete boxes with all the accessories and extra hands, even the Japanese paper inserts. No extra English on the boxes, so they must have been imported.

$6 for each box set.

Value Village on Regent in Winnipeg has a bag of around 15 Kenner Star Wars Figures(no weapons or cloaks) in their display. I couldn't see the price so I asked to see the bag. Price was $159.99.........:p Lady tells me she priced them out herself on the internet one at a time and that the total value of the figures was $450 based on that. She tells me that the Tusken Raider figure in the bag by itself was worth $60.

I ask her if she took the fact that they had no parts into account. She says yes. Of course I'm not buying what she is telling me for a second, but I thank her and we move along.

So I get home and google the magical $60 Kenner Tusken Raider on Ebay, completed listings. Loose ones with no parts are all selling for under $5.

I suspect that bag of kenner figures will be there for a long while. Ones I can recal that were in the bag are 2 Scout Troopers, Admiral Ackbar, Yoda, 2 Nien Numb, Stormtrooper, Snowtrooper and the Tusken Raider. There were a few more past that.

Thanks!

Everywhere is really. Its just about patience, effort, time, logistics. Ive had fun finds almost everywhere I go over the years. GTA, Minneapolis, Regina, Calgary.

For Winnipeg I've got a route that never takes me too far out of the way. I go to stores when i am near them, which is frequently.
