Looks like another Brick and Mortal legacy retailer “Toys R Us” has found themselves on hard times. “Toys R Us has hired a law firm to help restructure its roughly $400 million in debt due in 2018, a move that could include the marquee toy store filing for bankruptcy protection, sources familiar with the situation said Wednesday. Addressing the retailer’s debt load prior to the crucial holiday season could give its major vendors such as Mattel and Hasbro clarity into the company’s long-term viability to help ensure the toymakers continue to stock its shelves throughout the holidays. Hopefully TRU can work things out otherwise we Canadians are royally screwed having just 1 major retailer, WalMart left to rely on for new release toys.

I was told by a TRU employee that TRU USA and TRU Canada were essentially two separate business identities. This may not mean TRU Canada is in the same bind as its southern counterpart...

That is correct. There is TRU US and TRU international, which is us and the rest of the world.

As sad as this would be, I really can't say that I'm shocked. Anyone who has stepped in to a TRU in the US, or Canada can see that they have absolutely no idea what is popular and current in their own business. Granted, the market has changed and new things hit so quickly it's almost impossible to keep up, but that it no excuses for having terrible stock levels of the historical most popular stuff. It seems that they have this crazy hard-on for attempting to pick the next big thing and always fail miserably and end up having to clear things out on sale.

Then if they stop buying garbage, Hasbro will stop making garbage and everyone will be happy.

Making the local news... I noticed that in the article they don't really distinguish between the US and Canadian operations (somewhat suggesting that trouble would follow to Canada if the US parent were to go bankrupt)

Yes it looks like TRU International is owned by the USA Toy-r-us, so if they go bankrupt we would get hit to. Sounds like they might restructure and close store like Sears and Kmart are doing. Wouldn't surprise me if they eliminate Canadian stores. Then all we have is Walmart and Superstore for toys. One of the malls here was the busiest in the city only a few years ago and now Zellers/Target are gone, Sears gone soon, and maybe TRU. They will only have The Bay as an anchor store.
