Just because you like to discuss things doesn’t mean everyone wants to. And it certainly doesn’t mean that makes them scalpers.
Also, I can have the sightings thread set up for instant alerts and discussion threads set up for daily or weekly updates. Actual sightings posts happen way less frequently and are more time sensitive. Where as discussions happen way more frequent and are generally not time sensitive.
If discussions happen in the sightings thread people will get tons of emails that they don’t need to see and could actually make them miss something because users don’t get alerts until they visit the site.
I think separation is better.
