As for the wide appeal of the 2.5'' line they had a full range of really stellar vehicles. Some links from Joebattleines.com:

This Iron Hammer is high on my list of "what was I thinking by not picking this up when I had the chance".

This Steel Hammer is a smaller price point mech, but still offers such great playability. I actually got this one for my son when he was younger and he loved it.

For the vehicle enthusiast these sets offered a little bit of everything. Some minor improvements would include more articulation and accessories for the individual figures, but both these shortfalls that made up the 2.5'' line are focal points in the 8'' line.
