Re: Toys “R” Us continues normal business operations across Canada

I am really glad that Toysrus is staying in Canada, but I agree with SkitchDC on various things he raised. Majority of the store/shelf space are wasted by stock items that almost never move throughout the year. If they really want to be profitable again (and/or re-brand their reputation), then they really need to up their game for online shopping and their selection of toys in store. The in-store pickup option is a good idea, but you need to have the items readily available in stock to begin with!

I don't feel that I'm personally being pessimistic towards TRU and I feel like over the years I've been neutral to how i feel towards their stores...ive scored good stuff there before but I've also been frustrated by them just as many times.

Yes I've also read that MGA is looking at buying the stores but how will they run them? Will they stock heavy on their own brands and neglect other lines? Will they totally pull a 180 and get all the stores running the best they can? At this point it's a crap shoot.

Personally I don't really care if they stay or go. On one hand it's nice to have more options but all the same id rather just order online and save the time and money of running from store to store too often .

I want them to stay. I don’t buy a lot from them, but they are the only retailer that gives regular sales on product.

Of course I don’t buy much online, prefer to shop in person be it at TRU, conventions or local collectible stores.

Looks like the bid of $890 million was or will be turned down. Doesn't look good for TRU Canada but maybe another bid will work?

TRU Canada got tons of bids. So many they had to go to auction.

This bid was denied because it included the USA stores.

The Canadian operation is like $200 million or so in value. While USA for only 200 of their stores, not all of them, was the remaining about $700 million of that bid.

They may get lots of offers but that doesn't mean anyone will be anywhere close to what they want. Its only 83 stores in Canada and rumor is that they turned down a $271 million offer for them. That's over $3 million per store and still a no go. IIRC Target paid $1.8 million for 220 Zellers store..just the leases not the name or the inventory. So almost $9 million per store. Granted Zellers wasn't going under but I still think it will be hard to find a buyer.

And remember it's not going to be easy running them..much more expensive when you have only 83 store buying power then 1000+ buying power. I imagine they will have to mark stuff up even more.

Again I hope I am wrong and they stay as we already have very few options to shop at.

I think today is the day they are supposed to accept an offer so we will see soon.

"Fairfax agrees to buy Toys 'R' Us Canada in $300 million stalking horse bid, source says"

Ha I was wrong and am happy I was. This is great news!!!

Headline and story was misleading..it's just a bid and has not been accepted. Auction is next week. TRU could still turn it down.

I'm pretty sure the bid has been accepted, it's just a type of bid where others have a chance to out-bid them. My understanding is that if nobody else bids, they have agreed to purchase.
