For another question, how much design work never sees the light of day? What ratio would you say of designs make it to the shelf? How many drafts or revisions do designs normally go through before you're satisfied with them?

BTR Line, yes that's right I remember that line now and that's what those were for. There's even a couple of playsets we did for that too.
There's a chain level of decision making that goes into developing these toys. I'm not sure but I can guess about a good half of the designs are stored away in Hasbro's design vault. The art directors are really great to work with.
It's really interesting to learn what works and what doesn't when it comes to exploring and developing the designs of some of these characters.
Sometimes the ones you think looks cool and could be made isn't what the art director may particularly like, so you keep going. It's like an elimination process. I can tell you that I've personally done at least sixty concept sketches of Silverbolt for example (including both mech and ship modes plus head studies).
You really have fun with these and try to put out your best 'coz in the end that's going to be part of your legacy.
