This might be a far fetched theory but they may be wanting to go back to card backs for all their releases again like the old days and are testing the waters with these new Spiderverse figures.

I'll take cardbacks over the new boxes any day.

The old plastic-filled window boxes were nice, but boxes are too easy for swappers. Either way, I open most of my figures so it doesn't really matter to me in the end, but I think cardbacks are kind of the best compromise.
