I'm sorry but that is incorrect, the Government would definitely have a say in ensuring that Wal-Mart didn't own too much of the pie, why else do you think they stopped Sobeys from owning too many Safeway locations? Trust me the government has a say in how retail store chains liquidate their assets to avoid monopolistic control.

I'm certain Target might try to close some locations, the least profitable ones, however I doubt they could just shut down piecemeal and sell off everything to Wal-Mart like that article is implying.

What's this? They better not leave. I like Target.

I'd shop there a lot more often if their shelves weren't constantly bare. Decent pricing and a shiny new store doesn't help if you don't have product to sell. The video game and toy departments are just barren at my local store all the time. If the company would fix this idiotic issue that seems to plague many of their locations then they wouldn't be in such dire straights.

Re: Possibility That Target Will Look To Cease Canadian Operations

I have a friend in a mid-level position at Target and I asked them about this.

They said that there is no way that Target is ceasing Canadian operations, the main reason being that if Target completely abandoned Canada, investors would abandon Target out of fear and Target's stock would thus tank.

While it remains to be seen if they do close some stores, from what I've been told it seems unlikely Target would leave Canada completely.

I do fear that some stores will close though, like the Target in Waterdown, ON. That place is a constant ghost town.

Yeah, I highly doubt that they could walk away that easily.

Target will eventually find it's stride and I have been shopping there more and more, but they really need to work on their distribution.

Re: Possibility That Target Will Look To Cease Canadian Operations

Well I am getting pretty tired of my local Walmarts having little stock as well, combined with barely ever having good sales anymore, and prices that aren't that great either. I have been popping in to Target more and more lately, more out of spite than anything (it's a little more off my usual route too).

Their prices and availability on some things seem to be better than WM now too. Just tonight, I did some comparison shopping on some blurays. The Winter Soldier and the Hobbit 2 Extended were both $3 and $5 less at Target, regular prices. I kn ow not everything is like that, but it's making me give Target a better look when I'm shopping. And their clearance prices are miles better than the jokes that WM pulls.

The cost to shutdown Canadian operations would be quite costly so I only see them doing that as a last resort. They'll likely layoff staff and shutdown/sell off the stores that are the worst of the least profitable.

Personally I like Target and I hope they manage to turn things around.

Re: Possibility That Target Will Look To Cease Canadian Operations

Target has been a major disappointment, and it boggles my mind that they can't get there distribution system sorted out. However, I hope they don't actually leave Canada, as that would mean one less option for consumers (and one less place for me to check on toy runs). I do believe all this talk of them closing is being over blown. I think most consumers were really hoping that we'd finally have big box retailer that was as well stocked as it's American counterpart, but instead they were just like Walmart (possibly worse) w/ a sub-par selection of goods compared to across the border.
