Technically you can do that now, only catch is it's quite expensive.

I'd be making 12 inch figures with these.

Re: 3D Printing Action Figures Is This The Future Of The Toy Industry?

There was a booth at the Calgary Expo that was promoting their company that does 3D printing. Very fascinating stuff. The printer costs about $2000+, and spindle of the plastic was ~$50 for however many feet (and whatever color chosen). Printing itself took anywhere from 2-4 hours to half a day, I believe, depending on how complex it was and how thick (or was it layers/passes?) it was making the item. They were saying the printer can output anything from a 3D drawing file, even drawings done in AutoCAD and Google's SketchUp. Heh, I think I need to get around to taking that 3D drawing in AutoCAD course.

I certainly wouldn't mind owning one the day they become affordable. Heh, be neat to print your own accessories or maybe even diorama/display-bases for your figures.

If you look on Kickstarter, they've featured 3d printers that were as cheap as $700US (although who knows how much of a run it can do before the printer just dies out).

I've been watching the 3d printing industry closely because I'd love to be able to sell 4" figures (albeit with 5POA) based on characters from my own comic book. That would probably be more than a decade away but hey, so long as it happens in my lifetime :-)
