That's entirely the point of these Kickstarter/crowdfunding/Haslab items though, it's either going to be released if sufficient people want them, or they're not (for whatever reason, but likely because retailers don't want to carry it either because it's too niche, too expensive, or too large, or some combination of all of that). Like poor Haslab Cookie Monster, not enough people wanted him and so Hasbro didn't release it because not enough people wanted it. Meanwhile the Ketana, HeroQuest, etc can be made for those who wanted to buy them.
Likewise, when the first Spawn KS happened retailers probably didn't want to carry a Spawn line with no media tie-ins, and so McFarlane put it up on KS to great success, perhaps leading the way for items like Mandarin Spawn being wanted by retailers, and perhaps other Spawn figures.
I get the frustration, as often times Kickstarters are used literally to kickstart a company, getting the ball rolling for them so they can actually start releasing their items in stores and what not, but instead they're basically doing these items like a made to order preorder system on these various platforms. I assume once Todd gets his online storefront working it'll just turn into essentially a preorder system (though the funding goal aspects are quite fun). It really isn't much different than the way various companies are doing things nowadays, like Super7 for example, they open up preorders and people put their money in. That said, their prices are high enough that it's likely that no matter how much gets ordered they'll still profit (hence no need for a funding goal). So ya, it's basically a preorder, and that's just the direction things seem to be going in for online figure purchasing, for the most part, especially for the higher priced and more niche items.
