It will just shrink the market. Every time there is a price hike we get the usual complaints and talk of "time to stop collecting."
Now for some it does signal the end, but there is still a fairly strong base that is willing to keep spending and stay in the hobby during price increases. Will this time be any different? Maybe. However I think it will just mean fewer people collecting, but probably not enough to see an end to the adult market in general. Especially with yesterday's Doomsday reveal by Marvel.
It had something crazy like 10+ million viewers during the course of the actor reveals over the hours it ran. So I could see a strong base of collcetors if the movie is a big spectacle like Endgame.
I know I personally won't be leaving the hobby, but I will be cutting back further on my purchases. Right now Classified is my main line and I am mostly a completeist for Classified. However even now that has come at the expense of other lines.
Star Wars (TVC / BS) is nearly non-existant for me now. I still pick up the odd item here and there, but I probably only bought less than ten SW items last year.
Marvel Legends is trending in that direction for me as well. So far this year I have only picked up a couple of items and most were older releases that were on sale for a good price. So it will probably be the same thing this year.
MOTU is all but a sale purchase for me now outside of some Origins exclusives on Mattel Creations.
TFs are still a good line for me, but I have cut back a good bit there as well. I will pick up some stuff at full price, but most of the time it will be on sale and generally geared towards G1.
So yeah another price increase will hurt, but not enough to kill the hobby. Especially since we seem to have survived until now at $35/$36 6" figures and the US hasn't even hit $30US a figure yet.
