Okay, so it was just yesterday that fans got the chance to add Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths to their DC library and now we have our first look at the next DC Animated movie, Batman: Under the Red Hood, which takes elements from two of the most psycological and dark of Batman stories. I've got to say, we've seen write-ups and pictures of what to expect from what is to be, no doubt, a very dark Batman story, and I think this film will do nothing for DC and Batman fans but have them up and cheering!

And here we have our first sneak peek at the overall film and the work that went into it...

Scoll down and enjoy this two-parter taken from the Crisis DVD! :D I am telling you, this movie is going to rock hard!!!

Hmmmm..... picked up my blu-Ray today and will likely watch over the weekend.

But from what I can tell, the Batman: Under the Red Hood film needs more Captain America!

Sorry dude, I really can't control myself at times. ;)

LOL, to each his own they say. ;)

I am looking forward to picking this DVD up too.

It's a real shame they didn't use voice talents from the DCAU like Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and Loren Lester for Under the Red Hood, but the cast and voices they chose for this film don't seem all that bad. And I am sure Andrea Romano knows what she is doing when it comes to casting voice talent. :D

pud333
02-25-2010, 03:28 AM
I am really iffy about the dude doing Red Hood's voice, but I am happy with the other choices.

I am really looking forward to this. I'm glad they're using part of Death in the Family. That was the first graphic novel I ever got, and it got me hooked on comics.

Prowl_2009

Death in the Family is an incredable story and one of my personal favorites. Really took Batman back to his tortured soul roots. I must admit, I found Todd to be a punk and his end was very fitting, allbeit a little graphic. It was one of the first Batman stories I can ever remember reading as a kid and this coupled with BTAS has kept me a huge fan of Bats for years! :D Regardless of Joel Schumaccer, Batman Returns, Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Because there is still Michael Keaton, Jack Nicolson, Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Bruce Timm..... :D

I am pleased with all the voices for Under the Red Hood and now I am thinking we have two new DC characters that must be added to Mattel's DCUC line: Owlman, thanks to Crisis and a Red Hood! :D

pud333
02-25-2010, 01:01 PM
I personally would like the whole Villain line-up of Crisis to be added. But yeah, Owlman would rock.

As for Batman, he became one of my favorite characters after I read Death in the Family. Top three superheroes for me of all time, in order: Superman, Batman, Spiderman. I was so distraught after the series of Batman films that basically ruined him. But then there was Christopher Nolan, my savior, who resurrected him. Very excited to see the third movie of his.

Prowl_2009
02-25-2010, 01:38 PM
Same here! Batman's past has been so peppered by bad takes thanks to the campy-60's TV show and the like, but thank God for people like Nolan and Bruce Timm for giving the Dark Knight his due. Things sound like they're moving along with the 3rd Batman movie these days and, if the rumors prove true, I do hope Nolan and Goyer can do Superman justice the way they did the Caped Crusader.

I am actually in the process of trying to get my hands on a copy of Death in the Family! :D

pud333
02-27-2010, 03:10 PM
Nolan and Superman? How did I miss this news? Anyway, if it is true, that'll be cool, but Nolan is a master at the psychological stuff. He was perfect for Batman. For Superman, it's a whole different animal. We'll see if it works out. I am desperate for a Superman movie that just blows everything out of the water. I don't want him fighting Lex again, that's for sure. I heard of Mark Millar pitching his idea for a Superman trilogy that would be awesome:

He said: "I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

Superman of all characters needs and deserves the Epic treatment considering the badies he faces like Brainiac and Darkseid.

As for Death in the Family, I lost my copy years ago :(

Hmmm... The cover art for the dvd looks great, and it makes it look very dark and intense, but the animation itself seems... flat to me. And cheap. I dunno. Still looks like it'll be fun, and I'll most likely pick it up, but kinda let down by the actual animation itself.

Here is a shot of the back of the UTRH Blu-Ray set showing that the next DC Animated Original movie will be Superman/Batman Apocalypse! :D

pud333
05-29-2010, 01:32 AM
Superman/Batman Apocalypse? That's very cool. Would it be based on the comic book the way S/B PE was?

I googled and found this:

Then there’s the announcement this week that a sequel to “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” will be the next DCU animated feature after “Batman: Under the Red Hood”. It will be called “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse”. Comic fans will recall that New God Darkseid factored into the storyline after “Public Enemies” in Jeph Loeb’s Superman/Batman comic book – and that Darkseid is from the planet Apokolips. If this is a straight-up adaptation of that story, “Apocalypse” will include the secret origin of Superman’s cousin Supergirl, whose rocket was encased in a piece of the giant Kryptonite meteor from “Public Enemies”. Will Kara’s story be the focus of “Apocalypse”? Will Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy return to voice Superman and Batman in the sequel? How about Clancy Brown’s Lex Luthor?

Link. (http://www.supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=8030)

That would be cool. I really enjoyed the Superman/Batman: Supergirl graphic novel.

Also, while I love me some Superman/Batman (Honestly, I can't get enough), I would like to see a) Wonder Woman thrown in there for a real Trinity film, or b) a feature length on Flash. One of the best ever was in JLU when Flash beat the Brainiac out of Lex. I would like to see him in his own movie, preferable with a scarier villain than Boomerang or whoever. Problem is, flash's rogue gallery has never been too... impressive.

Prowl_2009
05-31-2010, 09:37 AM
^^ What, you don't like Gorilla Grod? :p LOL, I know exactly what you mean pud. They're talking about a Flash film being really close to being Green Lit and for the life of me, I can't think of a Flash villain that would really work other than....Captain Cold. Ah well, we'll have to wait and see I suppose.

I really do hope Conroy and Daly reprise their roles for this next Superman/Batman flick as well. :D

pud333
06-01-2010, 10:23 AM
Considering this is basically a sequel to PE, I hope so. For continuity sake.

I wouldn't mind if they introduced a new villain to fight Flash. When you go through his rogue gallery, even the names are silly.

Prowl_2009

^^ I've said it once and I'll say it again, Conroy is Batman, no 'ifs ands or buts' about it. :D

Tell me about it, Captain Boomerang, Weather Wizard, Mirror Master, The Pied Piper.... Oy, the list goes on and on. I am telling ya, it's going to end up being Captain Cold. Hopefully though, if it indeed does end up being Snart, it won't turn out like Arnold's take on Mr. Freeze in *shudders* Batman & Robin.

pud333
06-23-2010, 05:25 PM
We've got projects lined up for the next two years at the very least – lots of films in different stages of development and production.

This is what excites me most about that interview. Looks like we'll be spoiled for the next little while. Marvel needs to take a serious look at how DC and Warner Brothers have been going about their superhero properties and start copying them. I know Marvel has released some films, like Hulk Vs, but it's not the same quality, IMO.

Yes you do, pud! :) He's part of the DC-Showcase on the DVD. The story involves Ollie going to the airport to pick up his girlfriend (who I assume is Black Canary), but he is forced into action as Green Arrow when the life of a young princess visiting the states is put into danger.

Sounds awesome, but I still say we need a full length Green Arrow Animated film! :D

Yeah man. That would be badass. I've always liked Black Canary, and I really liked how she was portrayed by Miller in Allstar Batman and Robin. It would be nice to see a feature length with both GA and BC in it.

Red Hood was excellent.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed the fight with Amazo. Actually, I enjoyed all the actions sequences. I thought the voicework for Red Hood was bland and boring until the very end, where there was some real emotion to it. There were moments where the artwook looked fantastic, and other moments when it looked very flat and boring. Still, overall I'd give it a solid B. My favorite is still Crisis on two earths.

Not necessarily a bad thing. James woods is awesome.

Honestly, I'm not really feeling those clips. Especially Superman punching flame. Really? I dunno.

Few things: 1) Love that Conroy and Eisenberg are back reprising their respective roles. To me, they are the definitive Batman and Wonder Woman. I've especially liked Eisenberg as Wonder Woman. She gives her this air of authority and maturity that is really welcoming, since a lot of women in animated shows sound like girls, not women.

I already saw the film. Don't ask me how. Ahem. But I do plan on buying this as well tomorrow. All I'll say is, it's good. Better than Public Enemies. Way better. Though not quite as good as Crisis or Red Hood. Very faithful to the graphic novel for the most part, though I had mixed thoughts on the ending.

Here's how I'd rate the DC Animated movies from best to worst.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths
Batman: Under the Red Hood
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
Green Lantern: First Flight
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
Wonder Woman
Batman: Gotham Knight
Superman: Doomsday

Justice League: The New Frontier (Haven't seen this one yet).

Also, regarding Batman Year One: R rated? Um, yes please! :clapping:

And finally, I really, really, really would like a Flash film. I love Superman and Batman, they're my favorites, but Flash needs some love too. C'mon DC!

I know this isn't animated news, but I just found out that Zach Snyder is directing the new Superman reboot and General Zod is the villain! Awesome!

With superman being rebooted for a 2nd time, we are getting a villian that has made his appearance once in the Christopher Reeves films, and twice in Smallville (once as a entity taking over Lex, the other as actual Zod) I really wishing they would have a better character selection process.

Metallo, Brainiac, Darkseid (i know, they have all been on Smallville), But I feel like they should have the chance to hit the big screen.

As long as I don't see any Zack Snyder instant slow-mo action scenes that he likes to use (Watchmen, 300) I'm excited. Snyder does a really good job for staying faithful to comics.

And with Nolan over seeing the project as excutive producer, I have high hopes Sups will be good

I can't disagree with you there on any of your points. Personally, instead of Zod, I would have liked to have seen Brainiac or Metallo for the reboot. Darkseid they can have as a larger plot meant to tie in a trilogy. That would be awesome. I just want to see Superman beat up things. And please, no freaking kid!

Never seen Brave and the Bold, but maybe I should. Lately most of my animated watching has been limited to animes.

As for Batman 3, I've never been a fan of the Penguin, but I would like to see Catwoman. Hopefully it would be someone who isn't a stick figure like Pfeiffer, someone with real curves, and someone who can erase the vile, vile memory of the catwoman movie.

Bruce Timm admits to MTV at the NYCC that All Star Superman is, thus far, his favorite entry into the DC Animated Universe and that they tried to stay as close to the original comic as possible!

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/joshw24/news/?a=23722

Rumors are circulating that the reason Batman 3 is filming in Louisiana is not only due to the sweet tax breaks, but also because Waylon Jones AKA Killer Croc may be a villain in the third installment of Christopher Nolan's gritty reboot of the Caped Crusader.

http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/squirrels/news/?a=23652

I can't see Croc being a villain, just doesn't seem to fit into the universe Mr. Nolan has placed Bruce Wayne in with this new series of films, but I think it'd be awesome if he did somehow show up in the next installment of the series. :D

I know it's getting out of topic here but I really don't think Croc can appear in Nolan's Batman. The new Batman movies are too grounded in reality that even Catwoman would seem too silly to appear in the movie.
My best guess is Riddler or Black Mask for the 3rd movie but other than that I really can't think of a lot of villains that can be believable and interesting. Firefly maybe?

As for the Superman reboot. I really hope Zack Snyder isn't the director. I liked his 300 but that's about it. I didn't like Watchmen, the slow motion really killed the movie and the over use of blood and violence.

Yeah, pretty much what I think about Croc, but I think Catwoman could be part of the Nolan Verse. Riddler would be a better guy than Black Mask, who IMO seems just like another gangster.

As for Superman, I have my doubts about Snyder, but I trust in Nolan's guidance and in the script. I guess we'll have to wait to see what kind of footage comes about. All I know, is that Superman needs and deserves an epic trilogy. I'm talking about the universe ending kind of epic trilogy to end all trilogies, cause to me, he's the big daddy of all superheroes. He needs something that will make any superhero movie before it look tiny in comparison. But that's just me. If I were a billionaire, that's the kind of crazy shit I would finance with my money, haha. :clapping:

Check out the new press release surrounding the premiere dates for All-Star Superman from Warner Home Video:

Warner Home Video, ComicBookResources.com and The Paley Center for Media proudly present the bi-coastal World Premieres of "All-Star Superman," the exciting 10th entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, in New York on February 14 and Los Angeles on February 17. Filmmakers and members of the voice cast will attend both events for red carpet media interviews and post-screening panel discussions.

On Monday, February 14, "All-Star Superman" will screen at the Paley Center in New York City (25 West 52nd Street) with media interviews starting at 5:00 p.m. and screening commencing at 6:30 p.m. Following the screening, noted comics & screenwriter Dwayne McDuffie and casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano will lead a panel discussion. Additional participants, including voice cast members, will be announced as confirmed.

On Thursday, February 17, "All-Star Superman" will screen at the Paley Center in Los Angeles (465 North Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills) with media interviews starting at 5:30 p.m. and screening commencing at 7:00 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the screening featuring "Desperate Housewives’" James Denton (the voice of Superman), executive producer Bruce Timm, director Sam Liu, writer Dwayne McDuffie and dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano. Additional participants, including voice cast members, will be announced as confirmed.

Media wishing to perform interviews and attend the premieres must RSVP via email to WHVRSVP@gmail.com.

A limited number of free tickets are available for the general public. Fans in the New York City area wishing to receive free tickets to the NY event on Feb. 14 must RSVP via email to AllStarSupermanNY@gmail.com. Fans wishing to receive free tickets to the Los Angeles event on Feb. 17 must RSVP via email to AllStarSupermanLA@gmail.com.

Tickets to both events will be distributed on a “first come, first served” basis.

In "All-Star Superman," the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) and, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s safety before his own impending end with one final, selfless act.

Based on the Eisner Award-winning DC Comics series/graphic novel of the same name by Grant Morrison with illustration by Frank Quitely, "All-Star Superman" is executive produced by animation guru Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by acclaimed comics writer Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths).

The celebrity-packed voice cast is headed by James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor. The stellar cast includes seven-time Emmy® Award winner Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White, Golden Globe® winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Ma Kent, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Jimmy Olsen and Linda Cardellini (ER) as Nasty.

ComicBookResources.com will act as media partner for the events, providing updates and special prizing opportunities throughout its many multimedia outlets.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, "All-Star Superman" will be distributed February 22, 2011 by Warner Home Video as a Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD, as well as single disc DVD. The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.

Just watched Schooled. Awesome. I love Young Justice. Tried to watch "The Batman" but it's so... bleh.

Agreed. The Batman wasn't one of my favorites. The character designs sucked and nothing really was cannon. I mean, they made Victor Freis a common bank robber, not a cryogenetics expert searching for a cure for his wife. It just....sucked.

Schooled was an awesome episode, I am really loving this Young Justice show. Loved their take on Amazo, there was something very believable about him having to access the powers of different heroes through his interior database that I really liked. Made him more machine like and I throughly enjoyed their take on the character. :D

Check out the description of this Friday's episode, Infiltrator, which introduces Artemis to the series:

In this Friday's episode of Young Justice, newcomer heroine Artemis must prove herself to the team, though she has an uphill battle winning over her new teammates. I liked Amazo too, including how more rebotic he was. In previous incarnations, like in Red Hood, while cool, seemed too organic for me. The lack of emotion really made him awesome. He even moved sort of Terminator-like, which was neat. So far, Young Justice is hitting all the right notes. Even Aqualad is cool, and I normally don't like anything to do with Aquaman. Looking forward to the apearance of Artemis. Being the new kid on the block, I hope they put her through the ringer, haha. Ah, hazing. My favorite character so far is Kid Flash. When Black Canary tossed him on his ass and he said, "Ow, hurts so good..." I almost died laughing.

I gave up on The Batman after a few episodes. My patience with tv shows is at an all-time low. I know I should probably give shows more of a chance, but the older I get, the less time I have to spend on this stuff, means the less tolerance I have for shows lacking quality.

Yeah they did an origin closer to the original for him. Mr. Freeze is one Batman enemy hugely influenced by TV shows. The name Mr. Freeze comes from the Adam West Batman show, before that he was called Mr. Zero. The origin you see in BTAS was written by Paul Dini for his introduction episode. DC and fans liked it enough to work it into the DCU.

Both Joystiq.com and DC Comics Facebook page have announced that a six-part Batman: Arkham City miniseries is being released in comic and digital form this May to tie-in with the release of the highly anticipated sequel.

Says Joystiq.com: As a promotion for Batman: Arkham City, DC and Warner Bros. are giving you the chance to read a Batman story in its natural habitat: comic books. A six-issue Batman: Arkham City miniseries will be available in stores and digitally starting in May, linking the storyline of Batman: Arkham Asylum to the new game.

Arkham Asylum and Arkham City (and Batman: The Animated Series!) writer Paul Dini is in charge of the comic, while Paul D'Anda, who did concept art for both games, will provide art for the monthly book. In addition, eight-page "digital-first" minicomics will link together each issue of the miniseries, allowing you to experience basically every minute of Batman's life between the first and second games. We look forward to the issue in which he's just sleeping, and Alfred takes the opportunity to do some Bat-laundry.

Exciting, yes? See the attatched art-style preview for the up-coming comic series! :D Thanks to DC Comics and Joystiq.com for the heads-up!

Anyone catch All star Superman yet?

Yes. I thought it was... tame. I've read the comic, and I personally really enjoy the comic team of Morrison and Quitely, but I just don't think it translated well into animated form. There's a quiet nobility that Quitely and Morrison were able to portray in the comics, but in animated form, it came across as bland. It also seemed... stitched together. In the comic, where he's doing one task after another, it works, but in the show, it seemed like a patchwork.

It was very underwhelming I guess, especially after such solid entries into the DC Animated Verse as Red Hood, Apocalypse and Crisis. I would rate this above Superman Doomsday, but below the others. It did get better halfway through.

Warner Home Video has released the official announcement for Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, the next in the line of PG-13 DC Animated Original Movies....

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is an all-new DC Universe Animated Original Movie that weaves six interlocking stories of the Green Lantern Corps’ rich mythology around preparations for an attack by an ancient enemy. As the battle approaches, Hal Jordan (voiced by Nathan Fillion, Castle) mentors new recruit Arisia (Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men) in the history of the Green Lantern Corps, telling tales of Avra (the first Green Lantern) and several of Hal’s comrades – including Abin Sur, Kilowog, Laira and Mogo. In the end, Arisia must rise to the occasion to help Hal, Sinestro and the entire Green Lantern Corps save the universe from the destructive forces of Krona. Penned by comic book luminaries Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons, Peter J. Tomasi, Eddie Berganza, Alan Burnett, Todd Casey and Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be distributed June 7 by Warner Home Video as part of the build up to the release of the highly anticipated live action film, Green Lantern, in theatres June 17th.

I finally just finished the first game. I waited until it finally hit discount prices. It was fun. I didn't finish every little thing. I find I wasn't interested enough to figure out all of Riddler's riddles. I basically went from point A to B as fast as I could.

All in all, I don't think I'm a big gamer. I don't think I enjoy games enough, even though my brother works for Ubisoft and sends me free games from his company and other companies all the time. I've got a bunch of games sitting on my shelf with the shrinkwrap still on them. heh.

Also, as far as the artwork, I don't know if it's just that picture, but Catwoman looks short and pudgy.

Bruce Timm told fans at the Green Lantern: Emerald Knights panel at WonderCon this weekend that the next Warner Bros. animated film, following Batman: Year One would be titled Justice League: Doom, and would be loosely inspired by Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel" storyline from the comics. It will also be the last work of the late Dwayne McDuffie.

By way of the arc's story, which appeared in JLA #43 - 46, Tower of Babel centers on the perceived betrayal of the Justice League by Batman, whose secret files detailing the weaknesses of his colleagues fall into the hands of Ra’s al Ghul. He uses the information to incapacitate the League while distracting Batman with the theft of the bodies of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The revelation that the Dark Knight had devises contingency plans to defeat each of his teammates naturally creates friction, leading the JLA to consider expelling him from their ranks.

Cast and a release date were not disclosed, but as soon as something is announced, we'll let you know!

Is an animated version of the Frank Miller classic The Dark Knight Returns in the works? An article over at Bleeding Cool seems to think so:

Say the article: Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson‘s classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

Fittingly, Year One will come along first, but DKR is already in the early stages of development. According to our sources, several veterans of Batman toons past will be on the crew list, though we’re still trying to confirm who is writing and directing the film.

Although it is a rumor, for now, this sounds quite epic if you ask me. Thoughts? More on this story as it develops...

Warner Home Video announced this morning that Young Justice: Volume 1 will be released to DVD on July 19th!

According to WB's press release: These DC Universe teenage super heroes have quickly proven to be a hit as the favorite show among boys 9-14. With non-stop action, Young Justice Season 1 Volume 1 comes to DVD for the first time on July 19, 2011.

In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over — to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets? Are you ready to come of age in such a world? Are you ready for life or death rites of passage? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice — Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis — will find out: whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero.

These teenage heroes collectively become the Justice League’s secret weapon against the forces of evil. The young protégés must put their super hero education to the test and band together to covertly fight the evildoers that exist on Earth-16. Utilizing The Cave as their home base, the teen heroes will take on under-the-radar missions that would be impossible for the league’s famous and identifiable elders to handle secretly.

While the team works to take on more super hero responsibilities, they are in constant training by the Justice League to eventually take their place alongside the great heroes. Red Tornado is their supervisor; Black Canary is in charge of their training; and Batman determines and directs their assignments. Of course, in true teenage fashion, the members of the team push the limits of their missions, often turning a simple assignment from Batman into something significantly larger.

“DC fans have been vocal about their love for Young Justice, so I am particularly pleased to announce our first DVD release,” said Sam Register, Executive Vice President Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation.

“We are thrilled to bring the newest and youngest members of the DC Universe to homes with the release of Young Justice Season 1 Volume 1,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WHV Executive Director of Family and Animation Marketing. “As a brand new series, Young Justice is already a favorite and will continue to excite fans with its group of crime-fighting teenage super heroes.”

Any word on Young Justice airing in Canada?

As of right now, only Cartoon Network will be airing the show. No further news has been released at this time regarding the show airing in Canada.

On the animated DC front today, Game Rant has a first look at Arkham City villian Penguin and an accompanying write-up for the character supplied by Dax Ginn of Rocksteady Games. Says Ginn about Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepott -

"The way that penguin has always been portrayed is as quite an aristocratic, well-spoken gentleman who’s got these twisted delusions of grandeur…So we’ve made him a really horrible, nasty piece of work – but still with the delusion of grandeur. He dresses well, but in a poor taste, and we’ve made him this brutish, brutal guy but also key into collection fascination that hes had through out the years."

"Penguin’s faction is much more about the collection that he has within his museum of all sorts of things but one of those things he collects is heavily artillery. so when you come up against his thugs in the street they are all going to have seriously heavy weapons and that develops throughout the game as well."

This month's Playstation Magazine gives us a more in-depth look at Arkham City villian The Penguin.

IGN had the following to say:

In an article in the UK edition of PSM3 magazine, Rocksteady's Dax Ginn talks about how DC gave the developer a lot of latitude when it came to the characterisation of Batman's iconic rogues' gallery, and that while Penguin retains the squat silhouette of Oswald Cobblepot he's "a nastier piece of work."

It's a noticeable difference, with Penguin's effete cigarette holder replaced by a fat cigar and the monocle by a cracked bottle-end, which Ginn claims is "too dangerous to remove - but he likes it". He also appears to have some kind of voicebox surgically inserted into his throat - could this be a subtle anti-smoking message from Rocksteady?!

Whatever, the biggest and potentially most controversial difference is the portrayal of the Penguin as a cockney geezer. Held up within the Gotham City's Natural History Museum, the Penguin introduces himself to Batman "as something of a collector," in a brash London accent, which is a far cry from previous incarnations of Oswald Cobblepot we've seen.

The article also revealed some other interesting tweaks in Arkham City's gameplay. For starters, Batman will be able to perform multiple parries; in the first game thugs would obligingly attack Batman one-by-one instead of piling in, but in Arkham City the Dark Knight can parry up to three attacks at once.

Arkham Asylum's powerful Detective Mode will be restricted in the sequel too, so it can't be exploited in the same way as in the original. "If you turn it on," says Ginn, "you see the pertinent things, but other than that there's little detail, so there's no great advantage from just playing in detective mode."

Also, as befitting the world's greatest detective, Arkham City will feature more demanding puzzles for The Dark Knight to solve, rather than a series of trails for him to follow.

Thanks CBM for the heads-up!

If you grabbed the latest issue of Superhero Spectacular, you'll find an interview with game writer Marv Wolfman, who penned the script for the upcoming Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters video game.

For those who've yet to get their copy (now in stores), here is an exerpt:

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: You’ve written in so many different mediums, and I’m wondering what’s distinct about writing for video games.

MARV WOLFMAN: Writing a comic or a novel or animation or television or any of those other media, the writer is in control of everything. They control the pacing, they control what the story is going to be, how it’s going to go. Every element of the story follows through on a very logical and linear basis. When you write a video game, the player is in charge, not the writer. So what you try to do is lead them in certain directions, try to convince them that there are things that are really valuable that they should check. You want to hint at possible solutions, but you don’t want to give it to them because half the reason someone plays the game is they want to figure it out for themselves. If they get a little hint after a few attempts, that may help, but you don’t want to give it to them specifically. So the big difference is that video games are not always linear and you have to write it to keep it entertaining, to keep surprising the player, to add excitement to it, but always remembering that the thing they are doing is playing a game, having fun with the game and you’re sort of guiding them rather than instructing them.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: What point was the game at by the time you became a part of the project?

MARV WOLFMAN: When I first came in, they were still building all of the characters themselves. We worked up several different storylines, several different possibilities and directions we could go in. Video games unlike, say a comic book, where I can ask them to draw an alien race with armies and thousands of people, have technological problems and guides that only allow you to do certain things at certain points. Slowly we took away the complexity of this game we were starting to develop, remembering always that game play has to come first because game play is more important than just telling the most complex story in the world. By simplifying story, we were able to spend more time developing the characters and the story and making it more of a fun game.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: Do you find writing games creatively fulfilling?

MARV WOLFMAN: I actually love writing the games. One of the things that happens when you’re writing comics, which is still my favorite medium to write because it’s mostly me, or television or animation or any of the others, is you get used to following a certain pattern in the way that fiction is told. Video games forces you to rethink what you know, and I found that since I started writing video games, my comics and my novels and my animation have gotten a lot stronger, because it requires you to start thinking all over again; how you start out, how you can lead people in ways visually rather than having to say everything, because comics tell a specific story month in and month out. Here you have one adventure that you have to resolve, but at the same point can’t only be resolved through dialogue. It has to be resolved through the player’s own actions. It requires you rethinking your entire approach, and once you start those brain cells working again, it transfers to the other mediums that you work in. So I actually love doing it, plus I’ve been a player since video games began so I love it on that level, too.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: As someone who has written Green Lantern, what’s your feeling watching all of these aspects of that particular branch of the DC universe coming to life?

MARV WOLFMAN: Green Lantern is one of my two favorite comic book characters, because he has this incredible mythology. Green Lantern may be Hal Jordan as we talk about it, but Green lantern is 3600 members of the Green Lantern Corps, so you have this entire pantheon of characters that all have emotions, you have multiple worlds, you have this incredible set up and he’s fascinating, which is the reason I love writing the comic book. The second time I came to DC, it’s one of the books I requested. To see what I’ve always known and what the Green Lantern fans have always known as a great set up and a great series of characters, actually be exposed to the greater audience now is great. Green Lantern’s universe is so much larger than any other comic book character’s. There’s nobody in comics that has gone to so many different worlds, had so many compatriots and partners and belongs to this huge organization. Usually heroes fight on their own, Green Lantern is part of this entire pantheon of characters. He’s a fascinating character and I’ve loved him since 1958 when the Hal Jordan Green Lantern first appeared.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: As a whole, Green Lantern’s popularity seems to be huge these days. To what do you attribute this?

MARV WOLFMAN: I think the strength of Green lantern is that it can do many kinds of storylines. I happen to love the space storylines, because as a young kid buying that first issue of Showcase and then the Green Lantern comic itself, I was being exposed to stuff I’d never seen before in comics. Superman’s adventures, even though he could go into space at that point, most of them were on Earth. Green Lantern almost immediately went into space, and it was exposing you to all of these great ideas, and as the writers got stronger and stronger, all building off the previous set of writers, we got to see a lot more of the universe, more intriguing concepts. I think that’s one of the great strengths. The other is that he’s part of a group that is really strong. It brings you into an entire universe because even if you say for some reason you’re not in favor of Hal Jordan at this particular moment, you can go off with any of the other 3600 characters that are in this universe, plus all of his Earth friends and villains. So he’s a great, all-encompassing character.

Thanks to CBM for passing this our way!
